WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The Northwestern Oklahoma State baseball team won both games of their doubleheader against Southwestern on Saturday. The wins give the Rangers their second straight sweep of Southwestern, and moves Northwestern to 26-24 on the season and 17-16 in Great American Conference play.
Game 1
The first game of the afternoon started off as a pitcher's duel, with the Rangers and Bulldogs having a combined three hits through the first four innings. The Rangers broke the tie in the top of the fifth, as
Cole Barton singled to center field, followed by
Matthew Bailey reaching on an error to put a runner in scoring position.
Jason McCarty got on base with a bunt single to load the bases, and
Brody Harris smashed a single to left center to bring two runs home. The Rangers kept doing damage, as
Alex Dabrowski singled to third base and
Blake Mattern brought home another run on a sacrifice fly to put the Rangers up 3-0.
Chase Gordon blasted a shot to right field for a three-run homer to double Northwestern's lead, 6-0, and
Jailon Goodfellow kept the inning going by reaching on an infield single.
Joel Lindahl sliced a single up the middle to move Goodfellow to third, but the Rangers could not bring anyone else home. Southwestern plated a run in the bottom of the fifth to cut into the deficit, and added another in the eighth to draw within four, 6-2. The Rangers shut Southwestern down to secure a trip to the GAC tournament, 6-2.
Four different Rangers led in hits with two each, while Gordon led in RBI with three.
Logan Sandoval recorded his eighth win of the season, as he struck out a season-high eight batters in seven innings of work.
Game 2
The Rangers picked up where they left off, as Dabrowski hit a leadoff single to start the second game of the doubleheader before stealing second for his 43
rd stolen base of the season. Mattern followed up by drawing a walk, and Dabrowski came home off back-to-back groundouts to give Northwestern a 1-0 lead.
Northwestern's offense continued to thrive in the second inning, as Bailey got on base via an error, while McCarty hammered a single to right field to extend the Ranger advantage to 2-0. The Rangers struck again in the sixth, as Goodfellow walked to start the inning and moved to third on a groundout from Lindahl. Barton got hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners, and Bailey singled on a bunt to expand the Ranger lead to 3-0.
The Rangers added on another run in the seventh, as Dabrowski singled and stole second to start the inning, while Mattern drew a walk. Dabrowski and Mattern took second and third on a double steal, with Gordon bringing Dabrowski home to give Northwestern a 4-0 win.
Dabrowski led the Rangers in hits with two, while four different Rangers had an RBI.
Kyle Holzer recorded his first complete game of the season, as he only allowed three hits while finishing with five strikeouts on 82 pitches.
