ALVA, Okla. – The Northwestern Oklahoma State women's soccer team tied Newman, 1-1, in the season opener.
The Rangers got off to a strong start, as
MacKenzie Hickman and
Katy Jo Werner each fired off a shot on goal in the first 20 minutes. Northwestern continued to put pressure on the Jets, but could not get a goal, keeping the score at 0-0 heading into halftime.
In the second half, Newman immediately struck to take a 1-0 lead, but the Rangers responded in the 51
st minute with
Emerson Curd ripping the ball into the top right corner on a free kick to equalize at 1-1. Northwestern continued to create chances in the final third of the game, but could not strike again, ending the game in a 1-1 draw.
The Rangers outshot the Jets 16-5, including a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. Curd led the Rangers in shots with three, while
Cambell Tabor,
Madalyn Hundt, and Werner had two each.
Northwestern will be back in action on Aug. 30, when they host Rogers State University at the Alva Recreation Complex at 6 p.m.
