ALVA, Okla. – The Northwestern Oklahoma State women's soccer team defeated Rogers State, 1-0, on Sunday night. The win moves the Rangers to 1-0-1 on the season.
The Rangers opened the game on the offensive, with the first two shots on goal coming before the eight-minute mark, allowing them to put pressure on the Hillcats. After surviving four straight shots from Rogers State, the Rangers found themselves in scoring position, with
Mylee Yuill blasting the ball to
Cambell Tabor, who snuck past the goalkeeper to put the Rangers ahead 1-0 in the 27
th minute. Northwestern stayed on the attack, with Tabor firing off two more shots minutes after her goal, and
Emerson Curd as well as
Emma Yosten hitting the post off a free kick in the 34
th minute.
In the second half, the Ranger defense shut down the Hillcats, as they did not allow a shot for the first 37 minutes of the half, and only allowed two shots over the course of 45 minutes to give Northwestern its second win ever over Rogers State, and the first victory over the Hillcats in Alva.
The Rangers outshot the Hillcats 21-10, including a 13-8 advantage in shots on goal.
Jazelle Alvarado,
Katy Jo Werner, and Tabor all led the Rangers in shots with three each, while
Braxtyn Turner, Yuill, and Tabor each had two shots on goal.
Taylor Annen recorded eight saves in the shutout for the Rangers in her first start of the season.
Northwestern will be back in action on Sept. 2, when they travel to Liberty, Missouri to take on William Jewell College at 5 p.m.
