GOODWELL, Okla. – The Northwestern Oklahoma State women's soccer team defeated Oklahoma Panhandle State, 2-1, on Thursday night. The win moves the Rangers to 3-1-1 on the season.
The Rangers got off to a blazing start, with
Jazelle Alvarado and
Cambell Tabor getting shots within the first five minutes of the match.
Alexa Flores weathered the Aggie attack with two early saves, and the Rangers countered with three more shots in a two-minute span ending with
Mylee Yuill smacking the ball over the goalkeeper to put Northwestern ahead 1-0 in the 11
th minute.
One minute later, the Rangers continued their flurry of shots with
Braxtyn Turner speeding past two defenders to double Northwestern's lead, 2-0, in the 12
th minute. Oklahoma Panhandle State answered back with a goal on a penalty kick in the 25th minute to put the score at 2-1, but the Ranger defense continued to lock down the Aggies, as they only got one shot in the final 20 minutes of the first half.
In the second half, the Northwestern offense continued to create scoring opportunities, but could not find the back of the net. The defense continued to keep the Aggies in check, as the Aggies only registered one shot on goal for the entire second half, giving the Rangers a 1-0 win.
Northwestern outshot the Aggies 19-11, including a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Katy Jo Werner led the Rangers in shots with four, as well as leading them in shots on goal with two.
The Rangers will be back in action on Sept. 12
th, when they travel to Las Vegas, New Mexico to take on New Mexico Highlands at 3 p.m.
