Rangers Kick Off 2015 Season With Win Over OPSU

GOODWELL, Okla. – Northwestern Oklahoma State Baseball (1-0, 0-0 GAC) took down non-conference opponent Oklahoma Panhandle State (0-1, 0-0 Heartland) Sunday afternoon 8-2.

Leading the way for Northwestern on offense today was Jeff Martin who finished the day going 2-5, with one homerun and three RBI.

Jeremy Smith also had a big day for the Rangers going 2-5 with one homerun and two RBI.

Zach Postoak would start things off on the hill for the black-and-red as he would finish the day with 2.2 innings pitched, five strikeouts, and gave up one total hit.

Alexander Svetgoff (1-0) would come in and relieve Postoak, going 2.1 innings giving up one hit and three strikeouts as he would earn the win today.

The Rangers would break the scoreless tie in the top of the third inning as Smith would connect with the pitch sending it well over the fence giving Northwestern the 2-0 lead.

Northwestern would continue to put runs up on the board later in the fourth inning as Martin would blast a three-run homerun to give them the 5-0 lead over the Aggies.

The black-and-red would not let up in the fourth inning as senior Joshua Caruso would single to knock in two more runs to extend their lead out to 7-0.

Sophomore Thomas Sander would come in to relieve Svetgoff in the bottom of the seventh and would shut down the Panhandle State offensive 1-2-3.

In the eighth Martin would be able to advance his way to third and eventually score on a passed ball to put the Ranger lead at 8-0. OPSU would answer back in the bottom of the eighth scoring one run to trail 8-1.

Freshman Nick McKinney would come in and finish off the Aggies in the bottom of the ninth, taking the game 8-2.

Ranger Baseball will be back in action tomorrow Monday, Feb. 2 as they continue the series against Panhandle State in Goodwell, Okla. with a double-header beginning at 12 p.m.
