Joplin, Missouri - The Northwestern Oklahoma State Volleyball team closed out the Missouri Southern State University tournament with two matches Saturday. The team swept Truman State University in the first 3-0 and defeated Newman University in the final match of the tournament 3-1. Northwestern concludes the weekend 3-1 overall to start the season.
Match One:
The Rangers swept The Bulldogs of Truman State for the openign match of day two in the Missouri Southern State Tournament. Addison Wimmer led her team in kills with 21. Transfer setter Cameron Lobb led in assists with 30 and freshman Andrea Coady led in digs with 14.
Set One:
At the start of the first match both teams battled back and forth exchanging point for point while struggling to take a lead. Two kills and a service ace by the Bulldogs allowed them to gain a small lead at 6-4. The Rangers fought back behind a kill by Courtney Russell and tied the game up at 6-6. Addison Wimmer contributed a kill that jump-started a 7-0 Ranger run, allowing them to take a solid lead halfway through the first set 13-6. Senior Tarra Parks and Russell both contributed a kill each to push Northwestern's momentum forward. Truman State fought back with a kill and benefited off a Ranger service error closing the gap at 18-11. The Rangers strung together a couple of kills from Parks and Wimmer as well as a solo block from Wimmer to take the opening set at 25-14.
Set Two:
The Rangers started the second match with an early 3-0 run to put them in front early. The Bulldogs fired back with a kill to leave them trailing 3-1. Northwestern senior Ravyn Burns rallied her team behind a beautiful middle attack. Wimmer contributed two kills to keep the Ranger lead at 14-11. A kill from Truman State and a service error from Northwestern allowed them to close the gap at 18-15. Two back to back kills from Russell and a service ace from Cameron Lobb allowed Northwestern to clinch the second set at 25-18 and lead the match 2-0. Wimmer led with 13 kills and Lobb led with 19 assists for the team.
Set Three:
Both teams battled back and forth to gain a lead in the third set. An outside kill shot from Wimmer tied the game at 4-4. Russel contributed another kill and Lobb fired off another ace serve to allow Northwestern to lead 7-6. Wimmer heated up and strung together another group of kills to rally Northwestern forward. A service error from the Bulldogs established a Ranger lead of 15-10 going into the final set points. After a Truman State timeout, Parks fired off three kills to extend Northwestern's lead to 22-10. The Bulldogs fought back with a late 5-0 run. A kill from Wimmer and Parks sealed The Ranger victory 25-19. Wimmer continued to lead the team on day two with 21 kills. Lobb led in assists with 30 and Coady led in digs with 14.
Match Two:
For the final match for The Rangers four game appearance at the Missouri Southern State University tournament they defeated the Jets of Newman University 3-1. Addison Wimmer led in kills with 15 followed closely by Courtney Russell with 14. Cameron Lobb accumulated 52 assists and Andrea Coady collected 19 digs for the match.
Set One:
Newman University took a quick lead in the first set, piecing together a 2-0 run and a 3-0 run to lead over Northwestern 6-2. The Rangers fought back with kills from Courtney Russell and Carmae Jones, leaving them trailing 10-5. A kill shot from senior Ravyn Burns jump-started a 3-0 run to close the gap on the Jets at 10-9. After a timeout from the Jets, a solo block by Burns kept Northwestern's forward momentum. A roll shot from Parks and a deep corner tip from Burns allowed the Rangers to take the lead 13-12. Newman fought back with a strong block and tip kill to keep them neck and neck with the Rangers at 17-17. Two kills and a solo block from the Jets put them ahead by two going into the final points of the set 18-21. Northwestern fought back with a line shot kill from Russell and tip from Burns. A deep kill from Newman closed the set 25-20.
Set Two:
The Rangers came out firing in the second set, stringing together kills from Russell and Tarra Parks to take an early 5-3 lead. The Jets fought back and both teams continued to battle point for point. Another kill from Parks and Russell each allowed Northwestern to keep their lead at 11-9. Lobb contributed a setter dump to push the Jets into a timeout at 14-11. After the timeout, Newman pieced together a couple of kills with a Ranger service error to trail by one 17-16. Outstanding blocking from Russell and Jones kept the Ranger forward momentum going and caused a Newman timeout at 20-16. A late 3-0 run by the Jets closed the gap but a missed game point serve secured the Ranger victory 25-21. Russell led the team in kills with 11 kills and Addison Wimmer led the team with 10 digs.
Set Three:
Both teams fought to take a lead in the third set exchanging point for point and tying the match at 5-5. Burns contributed a kill for Northwestern. The Jets fought back with a kill. A service ace by Lobb and kill from Jones rallied the Rangers and pushed their momentum forward to take the lead 10-7. Kills from Wimmer, Russell, and Burns contributed a kill each to extending Northwestern's lead 15-10. The Jets responded with a kill and middle tip shot to force the Rangers into a timeout at 18-13. Newman continued to fight after the timeout, piecing together another two points. A kill from Burns on the right side ended their run. Jones and Russell contributed a kill each to keep the Rangers ahead 21-15. Back to back kills from Wimmer put the Rangers ahead 2-1 in the series and ended the set 25-16.
Fourth Set:
Once again both teams struggled to assert a dominant lead in the fourth set as the match tied at 5-5. Wimmer fired off back to back line shot kills to push the Rangers forward 8-7. Jones contributed a slide. The Rangers strung together a 4-0 run with kills from Parks and Burns to extend their lead 14-11. After a Jet timeout Northwestern kept their momentum forward with kills from Parks and Burns again. Newman responded with two kills. Wimmer contributed a kill and Lobb contributed a service ace to keep the Rangers ahead 20-17. After a timeout by the Jets they proceeded to go on a 3-0 run to close the gap at 21-20 and force the Rangers into a timeout. After the timeout the Ranger defense remained strong to close out the match 25-20. Wimmer led the team in kills with 15 followed closely by Russell with 14. Lobb led in assists with 52 and Andrea Coady led in digs with 19.
The Ranger volleyball team will be back in action on Friday at 10:00 AM as they travel to Denton, Texas to open up the Texas Women's Tournament.
