North Newton, Kansas - Northwestern Oklahoma State's volleyball team traveled to Kansas to face off against Bethel College. In a tough back and forth five set match The Rangers came out victorious against the Threshers. Addison Wimmer led in kills with 18 and Cameron Lobb led in assists with 36. Tarra Parks and Andrea Coady led in digs with 15 each.
Rangers improve to 6-3 on the season following their second straight win. Bethel is now 7-4 on the season following the loss.
Set One:
The Rangers started off strong with kills from senior Tarra Parks and sophomore Addison Wimmer. Bethel College fought back with an ace to keep the game close at 3-3. Both teams battled back and forth, going point for point and struggling to take a strong lead. A 3-0 run by the Threshers forced The Rangers into a timeout at 6-4. A service error from Bethel and an ace serve from Cameron Lobb switched the momentum. Wimmer and Russell contributed a kill each to close the gap on the Threshers 8-9. Once again both teams were stuck in a stalemate going point for point. Senior Rayvn Burns contributed a solo block from the middle. Bethel College fought back with a middle quick to push them into the lead 14-12. Wimmer started to heat up, firing off an untouchable cross shot and contributing a solo block to allow the Rangers to take the lead 17-15. Bethel College responded with two hitting errors and a service error to further Northwestern's lead. Burns contributed a strong block from the middle to force the Threshers into a timeout at 21-17. An off-speed donut shot from Russell and a kill from Parks sealed the Ranger victory 25-18.
Set Two:
Both teams started the second set exchanging blows and going point for point. Wimmer fired off a kill and Brooke Miller contributed an ace serve to allow the Rangers to take a small lead 4-6. The Threshers fought back, firing off a couple kills and going on a run to tie the game 7-7. Parks fired off a line shot and Andrea Coady contributed an ace to keep the momentum on Northwestern's side. Burns contributed an overpass kill to propel the Rangers to the lead 11-7. Bethel College responded with a kill. A few Ranger attack errors allowed them to close the gap 11-13. A kill from Russell and a missed serve from Bethel kept Northwestern ahead 16-13. Another small run from the Threshers forced the Rangers into a timeout. After a timeout, Bethel kept climbing with two ace serves, taking the lead 18-17. The Rangers responded with a solo block from Russell and a kill from Parks, tying the game 22-22. Strong defensive plays from Bethel College allowed them to take the set 25-23. Wimmer led in kills with 10 while Coady and Lobb collected 6 digs each for Northwestern.
Set Three:
Following the trend of the previous sets, both teams battled back and forth to gain an early lead. Bethel fired off a tip kill and line shot to take the lead 4-2. Both teams fought back and forth once again. Jones contributed a kill for the Rangers to keep the game close at 10-9. The home team continued to run, extending their lead 16-13. Parks contributed a kill through the block as Wimmer and Burns shut down the right side attack to close the gap on Bethel 17-15. Burns and Lobb closed another big block on the outside to continue battling for Northwestern. A missed serve and ball handling error from the Threshers allowed The Rangers to continue to climb 19-18. Wimmer contributed a middle attack on a crossing play to keep their momentum forward. Bethel responded with a kill and ace to keep them in the lead and force Northwestern into a timeout 21-18. Out of the timeout, Russell fired off a kill. Bethel responded with an off-speed kill and cross shot to take the third set 25-20.
Set Four:
Northwestern took the first point of the set with a deep line and off speed kills from Parks. Bethel responded with back to back kills tying the game early on at 3-3. Burns contributed a deep cross shot and Jones fired off a solo block to allow the Rangers to take the lead 5-3. Northwestern continued to run with kills from Wimmer and a solo block from Jones, extending their lead 10-4. Russell contributed a kill from the right side to force the Threshers into a timeout. Out of the timeout, Bethel benefited off a Northwestern error and added a kill to close the gap 13-9. The Rangers responded with a kill and solo block from Parks extending their lead 16-9. Parks continued to heat up, contributing another line kill for Northwestern. Bethel responded with a deep push. Northwestern did not let up, with an overpass kill from Jones and a line shot from Wimmer extending their lead 21-13. Russell contributed another kill off the block to force Bethel college into a timeout. Out of the timeout, the Rangers continued their momentum with a kill from Parks securing their victory 25-15. Wimmer continued to lead with 15 kills. Lobb led with 32 assists and tied with Parks for digs with 13.
Set Five:
Northwestern capitalized on a missed first serve by going on a 3-0 run to start the match. The Threshers ended their run with a cross shot kill leaving them trailing 3-1. Parks contributed an ace and Wimmer contributed a kill giving Northwestern their first to five at 5-3. After switching sides, the Rangers continued to capitalize on Bethel errors extending their lead 8-4. Kills from Wimmer and Parks combined with amazing Ranger defense allowed Northwestern to win the match 15-10.
Northwestern's volleyball team will be back in action this weekend as they hit the road and travel to Jackson, Tennessee for the Union University Tournament. In their first match they face off against West Virginia State on Friday at 2:30 PM.
