ALVA, Okla. – After nearly two weeks off for the Christmas holiday, the Northwestern Oklahoma State University men will be back in action Sunday afternoon at home as the Rangers host Emporia State at 4 p.m. inside Percefull Fieldhouse.
Northwestern enters its final non-conference game of the season with a 2-7 mark and is coming off a tough 75-72 overtime loss at East Central on Dec. 17. David Thornton had his career high in a Ranger uniform against the Tigers with 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Treyvon Andres had his second double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 boards.
The Hornets of ESU, members of the always tough Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, are 6-4 this season and fresh off a 93-85 victory over NAIA member McPherson College.
On Nov. 22 of last season, the Rangers got the best of the Hornets in Emporia with an Andres bucket in the final seconds for a 72-71 win. Andres finished that contest with a team high 22 points and eight rebounds. The Hornets lead the all-time series against Northwestern, 14-11.
Andres is second on the Ranger squad this season with 13.3 points a game behind 14.2 from Joseph Moorer.
One of the keys for the Rangers in Sunday's matchup will be stopping the ESU offense. The Hornets are averaging over 85 points this season with five players in double figures, led by senior guards Malik Hluchoweckyj and Sawyer Glick, each averaging 14 points a game.
