Weekend Preview: Rangers Set Out to Clinch Number Two Seed

ALVA, Okla. – The Northwestern Oklahoma State men's basketball team will look to lock up the number-two seed in the Great American Conference postseason tournament this weekend when they take on East Central and Southeastern Oklahoma State.

The Rangers will be coming off an emotional stretch of games that included two game winning shots, the defeating of the no. 7 nationally-ranked team, and a heated rivalry game inside a sold-out Percefull Fieldhouse. Northwestern will now refocus and look to add to their seven game win streak on Thursday night on the road against East Central in Ada.

A win over the Tigers would clinch the second seed in the GAC postseason tournament for the Rangers. A loss and a Southeastern win on Thursday night would set Saturday's game up for the determining factor in which team will earn the second seed.

The confidence of the Rangers couldn't be any higher entering the final weekend series of the year, as they won all three games of the daunting three games in five days stretch that every team in the conference must contend with. Senior Brandon Green put in the game winning lay-up on Thursday night against Oklahoma Baptist and then turned around and knocked down a near half-court three pointer against the previously undefeated in conference play Crimson Storm of Southern Nazarene.

His heroics in the 76-75 victory over Oklahoma Baptist and then again in the 53-52 victory over Southern Nazarene earned the Houston, Texas native Great American Conference Player of the Week honors. Green capped off his week with a season-high 22 points in the 86-77 victory over arch-rival Southwestern Oklahoma State on Monday night.

Green and junior Treyvon Andres, who averaged 10.6 rebounds during the three game stretch, will look to continue their stellar play on the road in the final two games of the season for the Rangers. East Central and Southeastern currently sit third and fourth in the conference standings and will provide Northwestern with play-off caliber opposition before the tournament kicks off on March 1st.

Northwestern defeated East Central back on Jan. 20 inside Percefull Fieldhouse by a final score of 101-93. Senior Cody Halvorson scored a career-high 31 points in that game while the Rangers shot a season-best 65.9 percent (29-of-44) from the field.

East Central will enter Thursday night's contest on the heels of a 100-74 victory over Southeastern, their school-record sixth game of 100+ plus points scored in a season. The Tigers currently rank first in scoring offense (86.3), field goal percentage (50.1), and three-point field goal percentage (41.3) and will be a tough match-up once again for a Ranger defense that ranks second in the league, giving up just 70.7 points per game.

The Rangers will then shift their attention to a Saturday afternoon match-up with a Southeastern team that has provided the league with just as much surprise as the Rangers. The Savage Storm have won five of their last seven contests and will be looking to complete the season sweep of the Rangers after a 75-73 victory over Northwestern back on Jan. 18.

That loss stands as the only home loss the Black-and-Red suffered all season, adding an extra bit of fuel to the fire for this Saturday's rematch between the two squads. Southeastern has continued to prove to be a balanced team across the board, and will be the Ranger's final obstacle in the 2017-18 regular season.

Games are schedule to tip-off on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. and then again on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
