Rangers Set to Open Conference Play Thursday

ALVA, Okla. - The Northwestern Oklahoma State Rangers are set to open conference play Thursday at 5:30 pm against the Crimson Storm of Southern Nazarene, along with Saturday afternoon taking on Oklahoma Baptist as both games are set to tip-off in Percefull Fieldhouse.

"We are excited to open up GAC play this week! Our guys have worked very hard to get to this point, and we are going to continue to do our best to improve each day. Every night out is going to be difficult, and our team must be ready to compete at a very high level to have success moving forward," stated coach Vinay Patel on opening conference play this week.

The Rangers begin the week 2-0 on the season after victories over Oklahoma Panhandle State (100-62) and Randall University (94-77) last week.

The Red-and-Black are led by head coach Vinay Patel, who is in his second season with a 12-18 record at Northwestern and an overall coaching record of 100-74. 

The Rangers have been led by senior Deon Barrett, leading the team in scoring with 17.5 points per game through the first two games. Parrish Hewitt and RJ Mason are a close second, both equal at 16.5 points per game. Bubba Furlong has helped lead Northwestern, concluding the first two games averaging a double-double with 11.0 points per game along with 12 rebounds per game. Jack Peck rounds out the five Rangers averaging double figures scoring 12.5 points to lead the Rangers bench scoring.  Defensively the Rangers have been led by Furlong with a team-leading eight blocks and Barrett with a team-leading five steals. 

Southern Nazarene: 

The Crimson Storm are projected to finish third this offseason in the Western Division of the Great American Conference after being the conference regular-season champions last season.

Southern Nazarene is led by head coach Adam Bohac who is in his 13th season in charge of the Crimson Storm basketball program. Bohac has an overall record of 253-123.

The Crimson Storm will be coming off an exhibition game against the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO), where they won 77-56, on Tuesday afternoon. In their exhibition game, they were led by Manny Dixon and Karlyn Kenner, who finished with 22 and 18 points, respectively. Thursday evening's game will be SNU's first official game this season. 

The Rangers will look to end their four-game losing streak against the Crimson Storm with the last win against them coming back in February of 2018 in a 53-52 victory. All four of the losses came by at least 10 points. Southern Nazarene leads the history between the two programs as the Rangers come into this game with an 18-33 record all-time. However, they are 12-11 in home games against the Crimson Storm.

Oklahoma Baptist:

The Rangers will welcome in the Bison of Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday, January 9th, with tip-off set for 4 pm. The Bison are projected to finish second in the Western Division of the Great American Conference, who finished fourth the last season in the conference. 

Oklahoma Baptist is led by head coach Jason Eaker, who is entering his third season with the program holding a 38-23 record through the first two seasons with the Bison. 

The Bison are 0-1 on the season after their Tuesday loss to West Texas A&M, 94-79. OBU will open Great American Conference play on Thursday against Southeastern Oklahoma State before traveling to Alva for the Saturday showdown.

The Bison are returning seven players from last season for this upcoming year. In their loss to West Texas A&M, they were led by returner Jaquan Simms with 20 points, followed by Jarius Hicklen with 15 points. 

Oklahoma Baptist leads the history between the programs winning 31 games compared to Northwestern's 17 games. The Bison have taken the last three games against the Rangers, with the Red-and-Black's previous victory in December of 2018 in a 78-77 victory. The Rangers have won three of the last four games in Alva as they look to continue the home success.
