Northwestern Continues Conference Play Saturday in Bethany

Alva, Okla.-  Northwestern Oklahoma State basketball is set to return to play after a week off as the Rangers travel to Bethany, Oklahoma, to take on Southern Nazarene in the Sawyer Center, with tip-off set for 3:00 PM.

The Rangers (5-2 overall, 1-1 GAC) come in tied for fourth in the conference, as Southern Nazarene (4-3 overall, 0-2 GAC) are tied for 10th in the conference.

Northwestern comes into the game-winner of five of their last six games, including a 73-71 victory the last time out against East Central in the win this past Saturday. Rangers led by Jason Douglas-Stanley with 12 points on the night as a team shot 22-46 from the field while forcing 16 turnovers.

The Red-and-Black are led in scoring by Larry White, who is one of three double-figure scorers for the Rangers averaging 11.3 points per game, followed by Douglas-Stanley with 10.7 and Brian Free at ten evenly. Malik Parsons, Anthony Jones, and Bubba Furlong are all right there with just over 9.5 points a game. Furlong has been the leading passer through the opening part of the season, leading the team in assists with 17 with four turnovers. Free is second on the team with 17 assists on the season.

The Ranger offense averages 82.1 points a game which is good for second in the conference only behind Southeastern. The ability to share the ball has worked well for the Rangers in the early going of the season, with the 15.7 assists a game as a team is second in the conference. Northwestern's offense will go up against the seventh-ranked conference defense in points allowed per game.

Northwestern's defense deserves just as much credit as the offense as the defense holds their opponent to 66 points a night which is fourth in the conference. The Rangers rank first in the conference in blocked shots per game with 4.3 and third in total steals with 56 on the year, good for eight per game. White leads the team with nine steals, followed by Furlong with eight. Furlong also has 13 blocks on the season, being the leader on the defensive end of the ball. In rebounding, the Rangers are in the middle of the pack, ranked 5th in rebounds.

Scouting the Opponent of the Crimson Storm:

The Crimson Storm are looking to get back in the win column after dropping two straight games to open conference play to East Central (51-50) and Southeastern (82-71). The home team won four of the first five, though, before the conference opener.

Southern Nazarene is led by Adam Bohac, who is in his 15th season with the program holding a 268-134 record.

The Storm average 71.9 points per game, which is good for sixth in the conference. The offense is led by Adokiye Iyaye, who leads the team with 13.0 points per game as one of five double-figure scorers for the Crimson Storm in players playing in at least five games. He is followed by Xavier Bryant and Mo Wilson with 11 each.

Northwestern will look to snap a seven-game losing streak against the Crimson Storm. The last Northwestern win over Southern Nazarene came in 2018 in Alva, with the last win in Bethany in 2017. The Crimson Storm edged out the Rangers in the last game with a 61-54 victory in Bethany.
