Smith Breaks Two Records on Saturday in Friends University Spring Open

WICHITA, KAN. – Emily Smith of Northwestern Track and Field breaks two school records at the Friends University Spring Open on Saturday.
 
"We were not at full compacity this weekend," Head Coach Jill Lancaster said. "What we brought with us did some amazing things that will bring them closer to where we need to be for the Great American Conference Championships next week. We have got the accelerator down and want to keep moving forward. The way everyone competed today shows a lot of promise for next week."
 
In the 100-meter hurdles, Smith turned in a fifth-place finish in the finals with a time of 15.50 second. In the preliminary round, Smith would set a new school record with a time of 15.49 seconds. Harlie Whisenant and Gina Wilson ran during the prelims, turning in a finish of 17.14 seconds and 17.59 seconds.
 
Smith's second record on Saturday came in the 400m hurdles, where she placed fourth overall, finishing with a time of 1:10.04. Whisenant came in seventh and turned in a time of one minute and 13.38 seconds, also in the top-10 was Mallory Paruszewski, who finished with a time of 1:21.62. Emilie Brown finished in 11th place with a time of 1:29.03.
 
During the 100-meter sprint, Babette Bright had a time of 13.09 seconds.
 
In the 400-meter sprint, Ladasheray Bell posted a time of 62.13 seconds. 
 
Briley Yunker posted a time of 2:35.96 in the 800-meter race.
 
Three season-best finishes happened during the 1500-meter race. Jerika Coon turned in a time of five minutes and 53.75 seconds, which is also a career-best. Jaeden Coon had a time of 6:15.96 and Jean Dodds finished with a time of 6:40.02.
 
On Friday, Kelsey Swindle competed in the hammer throw tossing the hammer 34.54m.
 
Krissie May placed fourth in the javelin, with a total distance of 34.43m, the second furthest throw in school history. May traveled to Wichita after competing in the rodeo for Northwestern in Weatherford this weekend. Swindle threw for 27.15m and Shaylee Beck tossed 12.90m.
 
Shaylee Beck placed 14th in the shot put with a throw of 9.08m.
 
Alexa Leyva placed second in the long jump for the Rangers with a total distance of 5.16m.
 
Austyn Pine came in fourth in the high jump leaping for 1.49m.
 
Cayla Smither jumped 10.71m in the triple jump to come in sixth place and Natasha Stocks totaled a distance of 9.18m for the Red-and-Black.
