Northwestern Finishes Strong on Day One of GAC Championships

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Day one of the Great American Conference Track and Field Championship got underway Thursday at Southern Arkansas. Gina Wilson sits in eighth place after Day 1 of the heptathlon.
 
Wilson, a junior from Perry, Okla., has recorded 2,005 points through four events. She collected 561 points in the 100m hurdles, 449 points in the high jump, 362 points in the shot put and 633 points in the 200-meter race.
 
Wilson started the day finishing the 100m hurdles in 17.32 seconds, setting a new personal best in the race, while during the high jump, Wilson totaled 1.34m. in the shot put, she tossed for 7.42m and Wilson finished the 200-meters in 27.97 seconds.
 
"Gina had a great first day in the heptathlon," Head Coach Jill Lancaster stated. "She wrapped up day one within 200 points of her first day PR and a little ahead of where she was last week at the Cowley Tiger. We are looking forward to the three events tomorrow. She has shown great promise." 
 
The final three events—long jump, javelin and 800 meters—will be contested Friday.
 
Kelsey Swindle, a sophomore from Woodward, Okla., competed in the hammer throw on Friday. Swindle had a top throw of 37.78m and finished in ninth place. 
 
"Kelsey had a great series today," said Lancaster. "She was able to beat opponents who were ranked higher than her coming into the championship. Kelsey has really taken to this event and showed a lot of promise today. The future looks very bright for her."
 
Day two of the GAC Championships will start at 9 am on Friday, weather permitting.
