CANYON, Texas – Northwestern Oklahoma State Track and Field break three records Saturday at the Jo Meaker Classic & Multi at the West Texas A&M Track and Field Complex. Emily Smith breaks her previously set record in the 100-meter hurdles, Deja Lacy sets the record in the 100 meters, and Harlie Whisenant sets the new mark to beat in the 400m hurdles.
"We have started to have breakthroughs," Head Coach Jill Lancaster said. "This is what we were expecting for our athletes and the rest are right there ready to tip over and get new marks as well. This was a great meet for us. We competed in a very high-level meet in a good facility and we could not be more proud of them. This will help us as we continue to prepare for the Great American Conference championships that lie ahead."
In the 100-meter hurdles, Smith places 13th with a time of 15.56, breaking the record she set last week by over 0.50 seconds. Whisenant had a time of 18.68 seconds, while Alyssa Wilson posted a time of 19.43 seconds and Elizabeth McMahan finished at the 21.38 mark.
Whisenant turned in a time of one minute and 11.41 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles, one second better than the previous record. Mallory Paruszewski completed the race at the 1:22.19 mark.
Lacy set the new mark in the 100-meter sprint with a time of 12.53 seconds.
During the 200-meter race, the Red-and-Black were led by Babette Bright with a finish of 26.81 seconds, while Shakira Lane finished with a time of 27.68 seconds.
In the 400-meter sprint, Alexa Leyva led Northwestern with a finish of 64.17. Briley Yunker was the next Ranger to finish with a time of 66.20, Jessalyn Rivet-Tissot marked a time of 69.90 and Emilie Brown posted a time of one minute and 17.65 seconds.
Mariah Malloy posted a time of 2:40.23 in the 800-meter race, while Angel Marshall had a time of 2:57.09.
Jerika Coon and Jaeden Coon finished the 1500-meter race together, Je. Coon turned in a time of six minutes and 12.32 seconds, while Ja. Coon had a time of 6:31.34. Savannah Francis also ran in the race finishing with a time of 7:15.95.
In the 4x100 meter relay, the team of Bright, Lacy, Lane and Leyva had a time of 51.13 seconds to finish in fifth place.
The Northwestern team of Smith, Lacy, Lane and Yunker finished in sixth place with a time of four minutes and 11.41 seconds in the 4x400 meter relay.
Shaylee Beck placed 14th in the shot put with a throw of 9.29m.
In the long jump, Leyva led the Rangers with a total distance of 5.21m, then Aaliyah Stovall leaped 5.05m. Lacy reached the 4.65m mark and Bright jumped 4.55m. Natasha Stocks had a distance jumped of 4.48m.
Cayla Smither leaped 10.53m in the triple jump to come in 15th place for the Red-and-Black.
"The ladies raised the bar again this week," said Assistant Coach Kirsten Nieuwendam. "We had a great start in the running events, then kept the momentum going breaking multiple records this week. The day ended on a high note, with the 4x400 group lowering their relay time and finishing in second in their heat. The ladies handled themselves well with the level of competition. The goal was to provide them with the best competition and they responded. Overall the ladies put in a sold effort and were able to walk off the track with their heads held high."
