ALVA, OKLAHOMA - Northwestern Oklahoma State and Athletic Director Brad Franz has announced that current Head Men's and Women's Cross Country coach Sterlin Broomfield is taking over as the Head Men's Track & Field Coach following the resignation of Derrick Young Jr.
Broomfield has been with the Rangers since the 2016 season, starting as a volunteer cross country coach before being promoted as the assistant coach in June of 2021, and later the head coach in 2023.
"I am very excited to have Sterlin take over as our Men's Track and Field coach. Coach Broomfield has a strong background in Track and Field, along with Cross Country. He is very dedicated, knowledgeable, and hard working, and has a great rapport with his student-athletes. He has come from being a student-athlete here and risen through the ranks and is well-respected throughout the region. Sterlin has deep ties, being a graduate and competing in the athletic program, and also has a lengthy career as a coach with us. I am very happy to have him leading our programs," stated Director of Athletics Brad Franz.
This past cross-country season, Broomfield helped lead two Rangers to the All-Conference second team for Men's Cross Country and won two meets this past season. In Men's Track & Field, he has helped lead a total of eight honorable mention athletes, 12 second team all conference athletes, three GAC runner-ups, and 1 GAC champion since Men's Track & Field restarted.
Broomfield has helped teams and individuals reach success over his tenure. He has helped lead a countless number of records broken across men's and women's Track & Field/cross country teams. James Fincher has broken outdoor records in the 10K and 5K, followed by the 3K in indoor track. Jamaira Ross has set the record in the 6K, 5K, and the 3K for the steeplechase. Cadence Long-Torres has broken three different school records with the Rangers under Broomfield. Along with helping oversee 100-plus personal bests in cross-country and track & field.
"I would like to thank President Dr. Hannaford and athletic director Mr. Franz for trusting me to lead this outstanding and growing Track & Field program. I am excited to continue the team's success that Coach Young has built over the last few years. Looking forward to giving back to the community," stated Sterlin Broomfield.
Broomfield has helped lead the Rangers to a Muthama-Rogers Women's Team Championship in the 2021 and 2022 seasons, winning back-to-back meets, and at the time was the first time the women's team won a meet since turning Division II.
Along with the women's team, the men's team also won the Muthama-Rogers Championship in 2022 for the Men's first team meet win since turning Division II.
Before joining the Northwestern coaching staff, Broomfield ran for the Rangers his junior and senior seasons, where he finished the season with an outstanding year as a Ranger, breaking the 2010 school record in the 8k with a time of 27:10.90 at the Fort Hays State Tiger Open. He set the first-ever 10k school record with a time of 33:49 at the Regional cross-country meet in Joplin, Missouri, that same year. He was also the Northwespy Junior student-athlete of the year.
Before running at Northwestern, Broomfield ran at Cowley College, located in Arkansas City, Kansas. With Cowley, he placed sixth in the 10K at an outdoor conference in back-to-back years and took seventh at the indoor conference in the 5K as a sophomore. Lastly, Broomfield was a part of the Tiger team that won the Jayhawk Conference Indoor Championship in 2013, scoring in the Distance Medley Relay and 10,000 Meters. He qualified in back-to-back years for the NJCAA Cross-Country National Championships.
