Rangers Turn in School-Best Marks at ESU Relays

EMPORIA, Kan. – Northwestern Oklahoma State track and field completed the second outdoor meet of the season at the Emporia State Relays, where the team set three more school records Saturday at Francis G. Welch Stadium.
 
The three records that fell on Saturday were the 100m hurdles by Emily Smith. Harlie Whisenant broke the 400m hurdles record and the 1600m distance relay team of Deja Lacy, Babette Bright, Ladasheray Bell and Briley Yunker set the mark to beat in the event.
 
"We turned in a solid performance," Head Coach Jill Lancaster stated. "We produced multiple school records, in both hurdle events and the sprint medley, competing in the event for the first time in school history. Emily (Smith) and Harlie (Whisenant) both set their records in their first race of the season."
 
Smith completed the 100m hurdles in 16.09 seconds for 12th place. Elizabeth McMahan had a time of 16.64 seconds, while Whisenant finished at the 17.53 mark and Gina Wilson had a time of 18.00 seconds.
 
In the 400m hurdles, Whisenant had a time of 1:12.78, while Jessalyn Rivet-Tissot recorded a time of 1:18.56. Mallory Paruszewski finished at the 1:22.56 mark and Emilie Brown had a time of 1:27.56.
 
Lacy got things started for the Red-and-Black in the sprint medley, Bright ran second, followed by Bell and Yunker was the anchor. The team recorded a time of four minutes and 28.91 seconds to finish in fifth place.
 
Cayla Smither turned in the Rangers' best finish in the triple jump, recording a third-place finish with a distance of 10.88m. Alexa Leyva placed eighth in the event with jumping 10.05m, while Natasha Stocks leaped 7.69m 
 
Northwestern had Bright, Smither and Wilson run in the 100-meter dash. Bright finished at the 12.95 mark, while Smither had a time of 13.47 seconds and Wilson recorded a time of 13.53 seconds. 
 
The trio of Lacy, Leyva and Bell ran in the 200m run. Lacy paced the Rangers with a time of 26.24. Leyva recorded a finish of 26.94 seconds and Bell clocked a time of 27.46 seconds.
 
In the 800-meter race, Mariah Malloy turned in a time of two minutes and 40.63 seconds, while Angel Marshall had a time of 2:54.10.
 
Malloy recorded a time of 5:32.18 in the 1500m run and Savannah Francis clocked a finish of 6:44.44.
 
During the 4x100 relay, Bell, Smither, Lacy and Bright completed the spring in 51.13 seconds. 
 
Smith, Bell, Lacy and Yunker ran as Northwestern 'A' in the 4x400 relay, placing eighth with a time four minutes and 16.76 seconds, while the Northwestern 'B' team of Marshall, Malloy, Paruszewski and Brown had a time of 5:03.23.
 
The Rangers had a solid day during the throws as well, with Krissie May tossing the javelin 30.82m and Eryn Setzer threw 29.73m. McMahan totaled 27.27m and Shaylee Beck threw 16.63m.
 
During the discus throw, Setzer threw for 27.83m.
 
Beck totaled a distance of 8.31m in the shot put.
  
Northwestern will be back on the track April 2-3 for the Jo Meaker Classic & Multi in Canyon, Texas, at the West Texas A&M Track & Field Complex.
 
"Our team competed much better this weekend," said Lancaster. "We brought out better marks across the board. Posting more competitive marks and we expect more of this in the future as we continue to move up the ranks."
