Alva, Okla.- Northwestern Oklahoma State University director of athletics Brad Franz has announced the hiring of Ryan Wondrasek as the new head coach of the Rangers softball program.
Â
"I am very pleased to have Ryan joining us as our Lady Ranger softball coach. Ryan is an energetic, highly talented softball coach with a great background which will aid him in building our program. He is a tireless recruiter and an astute student of the game. Most importantly, Ryan lives by Ranger values; he believes student growth and classroom success are paramount for his student-athletes." said athletic director Brad Franz.Â
Â
Wondrasek takes the reins here at Northwestern as the sixth head coach in program history after Jill Devries resigned this past May.
Â
He comes to the Ranger family after coaching the previous three seasons at Seward County Community College. While with the Saints, he accumulated a 32-24 record in conference play while earning Conference Co-Coach of the year in his first season with the program. He would coach five players to the All-Conference team that season. Following the 2021 season, five more players received all-conference awards.
Â
"I would like to thank President Cunningham, Director of Athletics Brad Franz, Associate Director of Athletics Tim Lauderdale, and the rest of the committee for this amazing opportunity to lead Rangers Softball. Northwestern Oklahoma State University Athletics is full of tradition, and our staff is eager to help continue that tradition while building a program that will represent this University and community with pride. I can't wait to get started and connect with all of the former, current, and future Rangers. Ride, Rangers, Ride!" new head coach Wondrasek stated.
Â
Before Wondrasek's time at Seward, he was the assistant softball coach and recruiting coordinator for NCAA Division I school, the University of Nebraska-Omaha, from 2016 through 2018. He would also oversee instruction for the catchers, along with coaching third running the offense in games. In 2018 he would help coach three players to the All-Summit League team.
Â
"I also want to thank the people of Seward County and the Liberal community as well. The past three years have been unforgettable, and I would not be here today without everyone's support," stated Wondrasek.
Â
The four years before his time at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, he was an assistant at St. Gregory's University (OK) from 2012-2016, helping with offensive and defensive instruction. Here he would help lead the Cavaliers into the top five in batting average and the top 10 in several offensive categories, and Wondrasek helped accumulate a 172-47 record for the University, including 81-25 record in the Sooner Athletic Conference while helping his team make four trips to the NAIA playoffs.
Â
"His experiences at all levels of college softball will be integral in his on the field coaching, recruiting strategy, and player success. Ryan brings with him an energy level and work ethic that will increase our Lady Rangers' competitiveness in the GAC and beyond," stated the director of athletics, Franz. Â
Prior to Wondrasek joining the St. Gregory's (OK) staff, he spent 2007-2012 as an assistant baseball coach on Norman North High Schools staff instructing catchers, infielders, and base running while coaching first base.
Â
Wondrasek graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 2013 while finishing his Master's Degree at East Central University in 2016 in Secondary Education and Sports Administration at East Central University.
