ALVA, OKLAHOMA - Northwestern Oklahoma State and Athletic Director Brad Franz has announced that current assistant coach Sterlin Broomfield is taking over as Head Coach of the Men's and Women's Cross Country team for the Rangers.
Broomfield has been with the Rangers coaching staff since the 2016 season starting as a volunteer coach before being promoted to the assistant coach in June of 2021.
"I would like to thank President Dr. Hannaford and athletic director Mr. Franz and for trusting me in leading this outstanding and growing cross-country program. There are not enough words for how honored I am. Establishing the winning success in the classroom will help the athletes be successful with athletics. I have the opportunity to continue to give back to the community that has seen me grow over the years" stated coach Sterlin Broomfield.
Since the 2021 Cross Country season Broomfield has helped lead the Rangers to a Muthama-Rogers Women's Team Championship in 2021 and 2022 seasons winning back to back meets and it being the first time the women's team won a meet since turning Division II.
Along with the women's team the men's team also won the Muthama-Rogers Championship in 2022 for the Men's first team meet win since turning Division II.
Broomfield has helped individuals reach success as well when Victor Kibet broke the school record setting the new 8K and 10K record for the program. The 10K record holder was broken back to back seasons as Davin Soto set the new school record this past season. Kibet then earned All-Conference 2nd team. Zachary Cox earned GAC runner of the week twice this past season also earning scholar athlete of the year. Along with helping oversee 45 personal bests in cross-country over the last two years.
"Sterlin has a done an excellent job assisting Coach Lancaster these past few years in cross country and women's track and field and was a standout competitor for us during his time at Northwestern as a student-athlete. He builds solid relationships with his student-athletes, is a tenacious recruiter and is an excellent coach which makes him such a good leader. I am excited to have him take the lead of our Cross Country programs.", stated Athletic Director Brad Franz.
Before joining the Northwestern coaching staff, Broomfield ran for the Red-and-Black his junior and senior seasons, where he finished the season with an outstanding year as a Ranger, breaking the 2010 school record in the 8k with a time of 27:10.90 at the Fort Hays State Tiger Open. He set the first-ever 10k school record with a time of 33:49 at the Regional cross-country meet in Joplin, Missouri, that same year. He also was the Northwespy Junior student-athlete of the year.
Before running at Northwestern, Broomfield ran at Cowley College, located in Arkansas City, Kansas. With Cowley, he placed sixth in the 10K at an outdoor conference in back-to-back years and took seventh at the indoor conference in the 5K as a sophomore. Lastly, Broomfield was a part of the Tiger team that won the Jayhawk Conference Indoor Championship in 2013, scoring in the Distance Medley Relay and 10,000 Meters. He qualified in back-to-back years for the NJCAA Cross-Country National Championships.
The Kansas native graduated with a Business Administration degree in 2015 before graduating with his Education & Sports Administration master's degree in 2019.
