Rangers Close Non-Conference Play with a Win

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO - Northwestern Oklahoma State Soccer bounces back strong with a 3-1 victory over Texas A&M International University to finish non-conference play.

After getting the first two shots of the game, Rangers senior forward Yazmin Gomez (2) knotted the first goal of the game at the 14:30 mark of the first half.

"Yea I think it's always important to score the first goal, really pleased with the way we came out and fought," head coach Erik Solberg on scoring first. "We were very energized in the beginning of the match today, being the better team from the beginning. But as we saw Thursday scoring the first goal is not always the most important as we still lost the game 2-0 after that."

The Dustdevils would eventually answer getting the equalizer at the 35:16 minute mark. However, it would not stay tied very long as junior Makayla Barrientos would find the back of the net just a little over a minute later with her second goal of the season.

"Something we always talk about in our program is to always score the next goal and we did that really well today they got the one to equalize and we got one quickly after and then got one late to put the game away."

NWOSU would lead 2-1 going into halftime.

Texas A&M International would try and start strong in the second half getting a shot off 40 seconds into the half, however NWOSU's defense would take over not allowing another one until the 83:07 mark which would be their final shot of the game.

Rangers freshman midfielder Carlie Massingale (2) would seal the victory with a goal during the 88th minute of the game giving Northwestern a 3-1 win.

"Very pleased with how we responded to the defeat Thursday night in a positive way came back and grabbed a win and really looking forward to see what this team can do once we start conference play next week but definitely a great way to end non-conference play. The win gets us back to .500 and give us some confidence and a leg up as we go into the conference season very pleased and very proud and happy. One thing they don't talk about is how difficult it is to go on the road in college sports and grab a win and this was a tough road trip and great to comeback with a result."

NWOSU closes non-conference play with a 3-3 record already equaling the amount of wins last season. Rangers soccer will be off until Friday, September 27th as the open league play on the road at Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

"We are 3-3 would love to have a better record than this but at the same point already got as many wins as last year that is something I am really pleased at this point with two thirds of the season to go but it's nice to get some positive momentum going into the game this week." Solberg talking about finishing non-conference play and opening league play Friday.
