A.J. Johnson, a native of Shreveport, La., is the second-leading scorer in Northwestern men’s basketball history with 1,682 points. He played from 1978-82 and guided the Rangers to the 1981-82 Oklahoma Collegiate Conference title. Also that year, he was selected as a first-team NAIA All-American and was the OIC Player of the Year. Johnson also was named to the second-team all-conference squad as a junior and was a first-team pick as a sophomore. In his All-American season of 1982, Johnson led Northwestern to one of its biggest wins ever as he scored a career-high 36 points in a 95-81 road upset of No. 1-ranked Oklahoma Christian College. Johnson is currently the girl’s basketball coach at Palo Duro High School in Amarillo, Texas. Last season, his team was the state runner-up in Class 5A with a 32-5 record. In just four years, Johnson took Palo Duro from a 0-12 record to its first state tournament appearance.
