John W. McCormick served as men’s basketball coach at Northwestern from 1924-33, even through his first stint as coach came as a freshman in 1918. He served as a player/coach when then Coach Frank Wyatt was called to serve in the military.
           
He also played football for Northwestern in 1919 and 1920, leading the Rangers to two conference titles.
           
In 1922, McCormick was hired at Alva High School and in two seasons his boys and girls teams compiled a record of 110-5. His girl’s squad of 1924 won the mythical national championship at a tournament in Croton, N.Y.
           
McCormick also served as athletic director at Northwestern and later coached the tennis teams.
