Mario Woodson was a member of the men’s basketball program known for his ability to both rebound and score. Woodson played two seasons for the Rangers from 1998-1999 and 1999-2000, where his success on the hardwood paved the way for him to leave his mark on the Ranger basketball program.
During Woodson’s first year on the court, he helped lead the Rangers to a 23-10 record and a Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Championship by winning the conference tournament. That title ended Northwestern’s three-year conference championship drought.
In the two seasons he played for Northwestern, Woodson was an instrumental part of back-to-back 20-win seasons. He helped lead the Rangers to back-to-back conference championships and national tournament appearances. Woodson was named a team captain and garnered first team All-RRAC his senior season.
Woodson concluded his collegiate career averaging 12.4 points and 10.9 rebounds per game while shooting 55.9 percent from the field and 63.7 percent from the free-throw line. He also recorded 109 total blocks, a mark that ranks second all-time in Northwestern men’s basketball history.
In 2000, Woodson went on to play professional basketball overseas in Turkey and continued his playing career until his retirement in 2009. Woodson resides in Enid, Okla., where he owns a trucking company, serves as a program manager with Oklahoma Juvenile Justice Services, and is the assistant head coach for the Enid High School boys basketball team.
