Dubbed as one of the "Dacoma Boys," Milfred "Mel" Sharp attended Northwestern State College from 1951-1954, where he was a member of the baseball, track, and basketball teams. It was on the basketball court, however, where Sharp was considered a powerhouse as a guard and scorer.
Making the A-Team his freshman year and a starter for his next three seasons, Sharp carried the title of "set shot artist" throughout his career as Northwestern as a high scorer for his team. As well as being tough and determined, there were very few games when Sharp had less than four fouls or completely fouled out... a true sign of hustle. Sharp holds the school records for the Most Free Throws Made in a Game at 19, and the Most Free Throw Attempts in a Game at 23, against Phillips University in 1953.
His senior season, Sharp was made co-captain along with the other "Dacoma Boy"  Dean Chaffin. Playing with his famed "hesitation" shot, Sharp led the Rangers in many games as their highest scorer. He was honored by the Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference basketball team by making Second Team on March 19, 1953.
Sharp graduated in 1954 with a mathematics major and a minor in physical education. Today, Sharp and his wife, Marnie, enjoy their California home. He continues his interest in business and keeps active by playing golf.
