Ron Pinckard attended Northwestern from 1967-1970 participating in football and track. In football he is remembered as a punishing fullback and defensive end for the Rangers, but received his greatest accolades as a track and field star. Possessing great upper body strength, the Follett, Texas, native still holds the Northwestern and Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference shot put records in track. His conference record heave of 54’ 9.5” at the 1969 OIC meet was made with a knee injury so severe that he had to brace his foot against the four board and throw from a near standing position. His Northwestern mark is 57’ 4.5”, while his discus mark is 154’ 5”. Later that year, Pinckard earned NAIA all-American honors by finishing third at the national meet in Billings, Mont. In 1970, he was named to the all-conference football team and led the Rangers in rushing during the ’69 season despite missing the last four games with an injury. Pinckard is now a coach at Booker (Tex.) High School, where his golf teams have won several state championships.
