Powell “Red” McGuire, a basketball all-stater from Sharon, Kan., was a stellar performer in basketball and baseball at Northwestern from 1937 to 1941. Agile, quick and blessed with a marvelous pair of hands, he played in an era when basketball teams seldom score more than 45 points in a game. He played on the 1937-38 team that co-championed the Oklahoma Collegiate Conference, made all-OCC in his sophomore year when he led the conference in scoring, and made all-OCC his senior year and again led all scores. A great defensive their baseball, McGuire had a brilliant baseball career for Northwestern. Serving his country in the military from 1941 to 1945, he returned to play semi-pro baseball and had a 38 ½ year coaching and teaching career in Kansas. He played sandlot baseball for the old Filson Oilers in Alva and for the Cessna Bobcats in Wichita. Red and his wife Oringa reside in Alva.
