A Bartlesville native and Copan High School grad, Phillips studied physical education at Northwestern while playing baseball from 2001 to 2004. He holds seven career records at Northwestern including games played (217), at bats (762), runs scored (250), hits (317), runs batted in (220), doubles (77) and total bases (540).Â

Phillips burst onto the scene in 2001 with a record-smashing freshman season. Over 61 games, he hit .495 and set single-season marks for RBIs (81), hits (106) and total bases (189). For his efforts, he was named 2001 Red River Athletic Conference Player of the Year while earning Honorable Mention NAIA All-American status. He was also named to the 1999-2000 National Dean’s List, as one of America’s most outstanding collegiate student-athletes.

Northwestern moved to the Sooner Athletic Conference for the 2002 season, where Phillips was a two-time all-conference choice (2002 and 2004), splitting time between shortstop and the outfield. In 2003, he set a single-game school record with four doubles in a win over Austin College.

At the close of his Northwestern career, Phillips held 13 Ranger record. He was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 2004 Major League Baseball Draft. After playing two years of minor league baseball, he began a career in medical and surgical sales in 2006. He and his wife, Janna, a 2005 Northwestern alumna, live in Owasso with their children Taylor and Bryce.
