Steve Gale is regarded as one of our school's best football players during the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference era. He started his career at Northwestern in 1978 after graduating from Purcell High School. During his freshman and sophomore years, he played on special teams starting as long snapper. In 1980, he earned second-team All-OIC as a junior. After a stellar junior year, he earned first-team All-OIC, first team District 9, and was voted Ranger Football Team Captain as a senior.
Gale graduated with his B.S. in Health and Physical Education in 1983, and went on to obtain his master's degree in Education in 1984. He was a graduate assistant for the Ranger Football team and also served as the offensive coordinator during 1985-1990. During that time, he coached the Rangers to their first two appearances as the NAIA playoffs and led the offense to two OIC Conference Championships. Rangers Offensive line coach Charlie Moot said, "Gale was an exceptional kid and leader. He led by his acts and what he said. He had excellent work habits and gave game effort in every practice."
Gale's success continued as a distinguished coach and administrator with 35 years of service in public education. From 1991 to 2000, he held the offensive coordinator position for three different high schools including Tulsa Union, Choctaw and Enid. In 2001, he became the head football coach at Alva High School and led the Goldbugs to a 60-30 record, which is the most wins as a head coach in Alva football history. During his high school coaching career, Gale earned District Coach of the Year, Regional Coach of the Year, and All-State Coach. From 2009 to 2017, Gale was the Alva High School Athletic Director and was named Regional Athletic Director of the Year in 2013 and 2015.
Gale and his wife, Pam, reside in Alva and have two children, Mitchell and Tyson.
