Mike Hargrove is best known for his professional baseball exploits, but during his college days, the 1972 Northwestern grad was a three-sport standout. No Ranger athlete since has lettered in the trifecta of football, basketball and baseball.

Hargrove hit .323 with 18 homeruns during his Northwestern baseball career and twice earned all-conference honors. In two basketball seasons, he averaged over 10 points per game, and during the 1970 football season, he grabbed five interceptions.

Hargrove was a 25th Round Draft Pick by the Texas Rangers in ’72. Two years later, he burst onto the Major League scene, hitting .323 with 66 RBI in 131 games to earn the American League Rookie of the Year Award. He topped .300 again in 1975 and was voted to the AL All-Star Team.

In six seasons with the Rangers and six more with the Cleveland Indians, Hargrove was a catalyst. His .396 career on base percentage ranks among the top-100 in Major League Baseball history.

After wrapping up his playing career in 1985, Hargrove turned his attention to coaching. He managed the Indians from 1991-99, leading them to five-straight division titles and two trips to the World Series. He guided the Baltimore Orioles from 2000-03 and the Seattle Mariners from 2005-07 before retiring.
