Ronnie Jones, a native of Dumas, Texas, came to Northwestern in 1974 after a stellar prep football career and made his mark as a small college All-American wide receiver with the Rangers. He earned all-OIC honors in football, baseball and track.
           
He began his career as a defensive coach at Northeastern State University, moving to Tulsa and later to Arizona State. He helped lead the Sun Devils to the 1986 PAC-10 championship and a victory to the 1987 Rose Bowl.
           
His professional coaching career began with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1987.  He coached there for three seasons before coaching one season each with the Los Angeles Rams, Los Angeles Raiders and Houston Oilers. Jones joined the staff of the Arizona Cardinals in 1994 and served as defensive coordinator for two seasons.
           
Jones returned to the college ranks in 1996 as defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at the University of Texas at El Paso. He joined the Buffalo Bills as coach of the special teams on Jan. 24, 2000.
