Herschell Mosier was Northwestern’s first first-team football all-American in 1971. A graduate of Woodward High School, Mosier was a dominating defensive tackle and led the Rangers to a 7-3 record his senior season. At that time, the seven wins were the most by any Ranger squad and earned Northwestern a trip to the Boot Hill Bowl. Mosier’s 1971 seasons was one fo the finest in Northwestern history. As a 245-pound defensive tackle he recorded 56 unassisted tackles and 74 assisted stops. Eight of his tackles were for losses. He also recovered four fumbles and broke up two passes. He also played on the offensive line and was credited with providing key blocks in Northwestern’s 21-0 upset of league champion Southwestern. Mosier also excelled as a place kicker, converting 12 straight extra points during the 1971 season, also a school record at the time. He hit 25 of 30 extra points and kicked one field goal. In addition to his all-
American status, he was named the Defensive Player of the Year in the Oklahoma Collegiate Conference in 1971. He was named to the all-conference defensive team twice in his career. Following the 1971 season, Mosier began a brief professional career football career as he was drafted in the 10th round by the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League. Mosier is a teacher and assistant football coach at Shawnee High School.
