Dick Highfill was the last person to serve as head coach of all three of Northwestern’s three major sports – football, basketball and baseball. He headed the football program from 1946 to 1954, the basketball team from 1947 to 1955 and the baseball club from 1946 to 1960.
His greatest success came on the hardwood. Highfill ranks among the winningest cage coaches in school history with 103 victories. His 1948-49 squad captured the Oklahoma Collegiate Conference title and earned the school’s first-ever berth in the NAIA National Tournament.
As a high school coach, Highfill tutored the likes of Darrell Royal and Leon Heath, both of whom went on to All-American football careers at the University of Oklahoma.
