Debbie Holmes Chappell was a vital piece to the success of the Lady Rangers Basketball team from 1978-1982, where she played in an amazing 115 games over the course of her career, good enough for eighth all-time.
Milburn Barton’s four-year starting point guard also recorded 839 points over her career while shooting 44 percent to get there. Arguably her best season in a Ranger uniform came during her final season where she averaged almost 10 points a game and pulled down 97 rebounds.
Debbie is also in a tie for first in most games played in a single season with 36, which occurred during her first season at Northwestern.
Debbie not only knocked down many shots from the field, but from the charity stripe as well. She was a player who you didn’t want to send to the line in the late stages, as she was a 78 percent free throw shooter during her playing days.
Northwestern’s Lady Rangers were very successful throughout Debbie’s time combining for an 81-37 (.686) overall record and an NAIA District 9 Championship in the ‘80-‘81 season.
Not only was she effective on the court, but the Dover, Okla. native also had a great career in the classroom. She was on the National Honor Society and also chosen as a who’s who among students in American Universities and Colleges in 1981-82.
Debbie and her husband Robert Chappell now reside in Oklahoma City, Okla. where she is a Case Manager. She also has one daughter Shandis (29).
