Donnita Drain is one of the greatest women’s basketball players ever at Northwestern in addition to being one of the most popular athletes to ever wear the red and black. Drain came to Northwestern from Taloga High School and played for the Lady Rangers from 1986-90. In her four-year career, she scored 1,916 points, at the time the best mark in school history. She still holds four school records, including best field goal percentage for a season (68.1 percent, 171 of 251 in 1987) and career (58.7 percent, 751 of 1,279). Her impact at Northwestern was immediate and includes one of the greatest 10-day stretches in NAIA women’s basketball. On Jan. 6, 1987, during her freshman season, Drain set a new school record for points in a game with 47 at Langston. Just 10 days later, she eclipsed her mak with a 48 point performance in a win over nationally-ranked Southern Nazarene. Drain shot 21 of 27 from the floor setting a new record for field goals in a game. A year later, Drain led Northwestern to a 22-5 record and its only Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference co-championship. Drain was an honorable mention NAIA all-American in 1987 and 1989, and earned all-OIC and District 9 honors all four years at Northwestern. In addition to her basketball honors, Drain was a seven-semester honor roll student, the OIC Women’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the 1988 homecoming queen. Following a brief prep coaching career, Drain was named the head coach at Langston in 1995.
