Steve Cooks, was a four-year premier defensive back with Ranger football team from 1986-1989. The Waxahachie, Texas, native was one of the best ever in the defensive backfield and one of the best all around athletes that has been at Northwestern. In addition to playing football, Cooks also ran track, where he helped the Rangers take the 1989 OIC crown with his 14.42 time in the 100 meter high hurdles.

Cooks ended his career with 160 tackles (107 unassisted), 22 interceptions for 361 yards, and 22 pass break-ups. He earned first-team OIC honors in 1987, 1988 and 1989, was chosen to the District 9 second-team in 1988 and earned a first-team District 9 selection in 1989. He was also a preseason All-American in 1989 and was elected as an honorable mention All-American in 1988 and 1989. His nine interceptions during his sophomore season and 22 interceptions during his career are still Ranger football records. Cooks received his bachelors degree in business administration in 1991 before becoming a graduate assistant from 1991-1992, where he coached defensive ends and defensive backs.

Cooks currently is an airports system planner with the Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission in Oklahoma City. He and his wife, Jenifer, reside in Purcell with their two children, Bianca and Steven. Â
